What is medication adherence?

According to the World Health Organization, medication adherence is defined as “the degree to which the person’s behavior corresponds with the agreed recommendations from a health care provider.” In other words, medication adherence is the act of a patient following their provider’s instructions in regard to their treatment.

Why is medication adherence important?

Medication adherence is important to patients’ healing as well as their overall wellness. If a patient fails to take a prescription at all or does not take the medication as directed, they are not going to see the intended benefits of that treatment. Beyond not seeing the full benefits of treatment, often a lack of medication adherence can in fact invite further danger for the patient, putting their safety at risk.
